Safe Homecoming Preparation Tips

Safe Homecoming Preparation Tips

Eid al-Fitr in 2023 will be celebrated in April. Eid al-Fitr can be interpreted as a return to fitrah. Eid al-Fitr celebrations are usually synonymous with homecoming. Symbolically, homecoming can be interpreted as a human activity to return to its origin or fitrah. This activity has become a tradition in Indonesian society, especially for Muslims.

Homecoming is not only a cultural and religious aspect but also a traveling activity. Most Indonesians do this activity before and after Eid, making it a mass traveling activity. Various types of transportation are used, from private cars, planes, trains, ships, and motorcycles, to buses. This is the reason why traffic jams and crowds often arise before Eid. To avoid various undesirable things during the homecoming trip, here are tips for safe homecoming preparation.

1. Make a Plan for Departure and Homecoming Time

According to the Ministry of Communication and Information (KOMINFO), the peak of homecoming flow is expected to occur on H-1 (Friday, April 21, 2023), where it is predicted that there will be a movement of 14.3% (17.7 million people). The increase in travel in the homecoming flow is predicted to start increasing since H-3 (Wednesday, April 19, 2023). For the peak of the return flow, it is estimated to occur on H+2 (Tuesday, April 25, 2023) and it is predicted that the movement will still be quite high until H+3 (Wednesday, April 26, 2023). In order to avoid accumulation, you need to plan when is the best time to do mudik and when to return from mudik.

2. Make a Homecoming Route Plan

According to data taken from the Ministry of Communication and Information (KOMINFO), a total of 25.13 million people plan to go home by motorcycle. Of these, the majority chose the North Java Line (Pantura), followed by other arterial lines and the Central Java Line. Meanwhile, 9.2 million people who plan to go home by car, choose the Trans Java Toll Road as their main choice for going home. For those of you who plan to go home using a private vehicle in the Java Island area, plan your homecoming route wisely.

3. Know the Traffic Engineering

One thing that is no less important is that you need to pay attention to the Traffic Engineering carried out by the Directorate General of Land Transportation and the Korlantas Polri. Based on a survey by the Ministry of Transportation, almost 40 million people choose to use private vehicles both cars and motorcycles. Therefore, here are some traffic engineering measures that will be carried out according to field conditions.

Toll Roads:

  • Contra flow & One way
  • Rest area management
  • Optimization of toll booths and mobile readers
  • Acceleration of toll road officer handling when a disturbance occurs
  • Restriction of freight car operation on certain days and hours

Non-Toll Roads:

  • Contra Flow
  • One Way in special areas
  • Management of traffic diversion from main lanes to alternative roads;
  • Restriction of U-turn locations.
  • Prioritization of homecoming/return movements at intersections and U-turns
  • Regulation of side barriers (Buses/Motorcycles that "hang out" at intersections)
  • Traffic regulation at spill over market locations
  • Restriction of non-motorized vehicles on main roads
  • Restrictions on the operation of freight cars on certain days and hours

4. Get Enough Rest Before Traveling

For those of you who are going home using a private vehicle, rest before the trip to avoid drowsiness and an unfit body. Do not force an unfit body condition and keep traveling.

5. Bring Medicine Equipment

It's important to bring your medication when you're going on a trip. In addition, vitamins and supplements can be considered to be necessary so that the body does not get sick easily.

6. Choose a Comfortable and Safe Mode of Transportation

When choosing a mode of transportation for homecoming, there are several things to consider, such as the distance to your hometown and the comfort of the transportation. For example, if the distance is from Java to Sumatra, but you want to maintain comfort, you can consider air transportation.

7. Check the Condition of Your Vehicle

For those of you who are going on a homecoming trip using a private vehicle, it is necessary to do some checks. Check the engine, brakes, oil, tires, and tools such as jacks, screwdrivers, and pliers just in case. This must be done in order to continue traveling safely in a private vehicle.
