Avoid These Four Areas when Lightning Rain Occurs

Rain lightning is a weather phenomenon that can be frightening and dangerous. The booming sound of thunder and the blinding flashes of lightning are often signs that we should seek safety immediately. When lightning rain occurs, some areas should be avoided to keep ourselves and those around us safe. Here are four areas to avoid during lightning rain:

  1. Under Trees
Standing or sheltering under a tree during lightning rain is very risky. Lightning often strikes trees due to their height, and if you are under one, there is a high chance that you will be hit. In addition, trees struck by lightning can snap or fall over, posing greater physical danger. If you are outside during a thunder shower, immediately find a safe place inside a building or vehicle, away from trees.
  2. Open Areas
Standing in an open area, such as a field or beachfront, is especially dangerous during lightning rain. Without protection from buildings or other structures, the risk of being struck by lightning increases. Open areas do not provide safe shelter, and in some cases, being in an elevated or open location can make you a target for lightning strikes. If you are outside during severe weather, seek shelter in a safe place immediately.
  3. Temporary Buildings or Construction
Temporary buildings, such as tents, roofless sheds, or buildings under construction, do not provide adequate protection during lightning showers. These structures are not designed to withstand lightning strikes and can become very dangerous. If you are near such areas, it is important to immediately seek a safer place, such as a building with a solid roof and strong walls.
  4. Dams and Lakes
It is very important to avoid dams, lakes, or other water areas during lightning rain.  Water is a conductor of electricity, and being near it increases the risk of getting a lightning strike. In addition, heavy rain can cause sudden flooding in the area, posing a greater safety risk. If you are near a water source, immediately go to higher ground and seek shelter.

Lightning and rain can be very dangerous situations, and it is important to take precautions to protect yourself. Avoiding vulnerable areas, such as under trees, open areas, temporary structures, and near dams or lakes,  can reduce the risk of being impacted by lightning. Always prioritize the safety of yourself  and those around you when severe weather strikes and be sure to seek safe shelter until the storm subsides.
